How to cope with arthritis

Arthritis can be a pain. Quite literally, the common condition causes inflammation and various degrees of pain. It is experienced by 1/6th of the UK population, mainly older people - but it can also affect young adults and children. It is a chronic condition, but the symptoms can be lessened with some lifestyle changes.

Make sure that you see a doctor with suspected arthritis. Once it is confirmed, you could try these self-help methods for arthritis relief:

Exercise

Make sure that you consult your doctor before starting any exercise routine, as it’s important that you exercise to your abilities and consider the restraints of your arthritis. However, exercise can help in most cases. It will help you to reduce stiffness, increase your muscle strength, and lose weight which could add pressure to the joint.

Eat healthily

Losing weight tends to help overweight people with their arthritis symptoms - however, not all arthritis sufferers are overweight. It is beneficial for people with arthritis to eat healthily whatever their weight. Make sure that you eat plenty of vegetables, protein, and complex carbohydrates. Avoid excess sugar, salt, and too much fat.

Take a collagen supplement

Collagen strengthens bones and ligaments. This means that it could help arthritis sufferers with their symptoms, as, when taken over a period of 4-6 weeks, it could increase the strength of the suffering joints and subsequently ease the pressure. Kollo is a supplement containing marine collagen for arthritis, but it also has other benefits like including essential vitamins and amino acids.

Take care of your joints

Taking care of your joints can prevent any more damage. This means avoiding putting too much unnecessary strain on the injured joint - don't put undue weight on it, or if the arthritic joint is in your hand, don't grip too tightly.

Also, avoid sitting in certain positions that will aggravate the joint, or sitting in any position for too long a time.

Arthritis can be difficult to adapt to, but with these simple solutions, you can stop it from taking over your life. Be sure to discuss all of this with a doctor when you are diagnosed with arthritis, and work together to find the best form of treatment.
