How does collagen absorption work?

The clear truth is that collagen supplements do work and have been proven to offer significant health benefits. Supplement sceptics often doubt the efficacy of supplements, claiming that they are destroyed by the hydrochloric acid in the stomach before they can be absorbed in the intestine or that they are too large to be absorbed by the human body.

These claims are simply not true and these myths have been debunked by experts and studies in recent years to showcase the genuine efficacy of collagen supplements. So, how does collagen absorption work and how can collagen supplements positively impact health?

Collagen peptides improve absorption

Hydrolysed collagen, also known as collagen peptides, is the form of collagen that is found in a marine collagen supplement. Unlike when the protein is found in its native state, hydrolysed collagen is broken down by a Japanese patented process known as hydrolysis, which is a similar process to the way that we digest food. In its "raw" form, the molecular weight of collagen is 300,000 daltons. This makes the raw form simply too large for the human body to process and absorb. Therefore, collagen peptides ensure that it is essentially broken down into smaller molecules that are ideally sized for absorption by the body.

How does collagen help improve health?

Once the collagen peptides have been absorbed by the gut and cross over into the bloodstream, they can then travel through the blood to all the necessary areas. For example, collagen is an essential protein for the growth and repair of tissues such as the skin, hair, joints, muscles and bones. Collagen is naturally the most abundant protein in the human body, but levels can often become depleted or you may need extra collagen if you are extremely active or participate in regular workouts or sports. Therefore, a collagen supplement can travel through your body to the places that need it the most.

Are collagen supplements more effective than diet?

It can be difficult to obtain all the essential collagen that you need through diet alone. To consume the equivalent of the 10g of daily collagen that has found to be effective in clinical trials, you would need to eat a lot of food. What's more, the collagen peptides in supplements ensure that you are absorbing the collagen with as much ease as possible. Essentially, taking a collagen supplement is a great way to improve your health with ease and simplicity.

Does marine collagen really work?

Multiple clinical studies have highlighted the effectiveness of collagen supplements when it comes to improving health and wellbeing. One French study found that the skin of its participants was substantially smoother after taking collagen supplements, reversing some of the effects of ageing, such as fine lines, crows feet and wrinkles. After 12 weeks, the skin of the participants was markedly more hydrated and demonstrated improved elasticity thanks to collagen supplements.
