3 ways vitamin B5 keeps skin healthy

Vitamin B5 comes with a range of health benefits, including helping to reduce LDL cholesterol levels and keeping the digestive system functioning properly. Beyond this, however, it can also be very beneficial to the health of your skin, enabling you to combat the effects of ageing and other issues. Here are three ways it improves skin health.

Helps to get rid of acne

Acne is not just a condition that affects teenagers – a report published in 2018 revealed that up to 22% of adult women aged between 26 and 44 had problems with it. Acne can make people feel very self-conscious, but vitamin B5 is a useful weapon in the battle against it. A research study from six years ago found that acne sufferers who took 2.2g of vitamin B5 each day for a period of 12 weeks saw a significant improvement. This is most likely due to the fact that vitamin B5 works as an antibacterial agent.

Helps to keep skin soft and moisturised

Vitamin B5 contains a provitamin called panthenol, which has the effect of softening the skin. This helps to get rid of wrinkles and fine lines and is one of the reasons why this vitamin is commonly found in beauty products aimed at fighting the effects of ageing on the skin. As well as softening it, vitamin B5 also helps to keep the outermost layer of skin on your face and neck from becoming thin and dry, while also exfoliating it to enable new cells to grow and replace dead ones.

Helps to keep the skin hydrated

Maintaining well-hydrated skin is vital to retaining its youthful beauty and glow and vitamin B5 is a humectant – which means that it naturally hydrates. It does this by stabilising the barrier function within your skin, which means that the skin retains more water than it would if you were suffering from a deficiency of B5. If you have problems with excessively dry skin, vitamin B5 supplements or serums will help stop too much water from leaving it.
