The benefits of collagen for hair loss

Collagen is the most prevalent protein you’ll find in the human body, and is responsible for building skin, tendons and ligaments. While the body produces its own collagen, most people will benefit from getting a little extra through the use of supplements such as Kollo. Collagen also has scientifically proven benefits for your hair, which is good news for anyone who is suffering from hair loss or thinning hair.

Why does your hair need collagen?

Hair is mostly made up of a protein called keratin, which in turn is made up of a number of amino acids which include collagen. Consuming additional collagen gives your body more of the fuel it needs to produce keratin, which can help with hair growth, thickening and overall health. So what effects are you likely to see if you take collagen supplements?

Reduced damage to hair follicles

Collagen is an antioxidant and fights the damage caused by free radicals which can weaken hair follicles. As we age, our bodies become less able to fight off the damage caused by free radicals, which may result in damage to your hair. Studies have shown that collagen – and marine collagen in particular – is great at fighting four different free radicals, so it helps your hair stay strong and healthy.

Slow-down in hair thinning

Your dermis is made up of 70% collagen, and this is the middle layer of the skin where all your hair roots are located. One of the reasons our hair thins as we age is because the body slows down its natural production of collagen, which means reduced strength and elasticity in the dermis. One two-month study of almost 70 women found that those taking a collagen supplement every day saw improved elasticity in the dermis. Since this is where your hair roots are, there is evidence that added collagen slows down the thinning of hair as we age.

Fewer grey hairs

While greying hair may be partly down to genetics, it’s also partly down to the damage caused by free radicals. Poor diet, stress and the environment can all contribute to the death of melanin cells, and melanin is what gives your hair its colour. Thanks to its antioxidant properties, collagen can help fight off the things which cause damage to melanin-generating cells, which slows down greying as we age.

Overall, collagen supplements have been shown to have a positive impact on the health and appearance of our hair. Kollo supplements are easy to incorporate into your diet, giving your body that extra power it needs to fight the signs of damage to your hair.
